82 YEAR OLD MAN GRANTED DIVORCE AFTER 60+ YEARS

Corning, New York* (JFK+50) On April 23, 1963, Associated Press reports that Charles Woodcock, 82 years of age, has been granted a divorce.

While that does not sound unusual, the fact that he hasn't seen his wife since "she left him a few months after their marriage in 1899" is rather strange.

Mr. Woodcock was granted his divorce yesterday in the New York State Supreme Court.

*Corning is located in Steuben County, New York on the Chemung River.  It was named for Erastus Corning, an Albany railroad executive who invested in the company which developed the town.

MOVIE STAR'S WIFE MUST FORFEIT ALIMONY OR SURRENDER FAMILY DOG

Los Angeles, California (JFK+50) On May 2, 1925, Associated Press reports that the wife of silent screen actor Art Acord* will not receive alimony if she "persists in denying him the companionship and aid of their family dog."

This was the ruling yesterday in superior court here in Los Angeles where Mrs. Acord "is asking temporary alimony pending the outcome of her lawsuit for divorce."

The court ruled that as "common property," Mr. Acord "has a right to utilize" the canine's acting ability to earn a portion of the alimony.

*Arthemus Acord (1890-1931) was born in Prattsville, Utah & became a silent film actor & rodeo champion.  AA served in WWI where he won the Croix de Gueire for bravery.  His acting career declined with the advent of sound movies & he took up mining in Mexico.

"SHE HAS MADE MY LIFE ONE OF TORTURE"

DETECTIVE CLAIMS WIFE SPENDS MOST OF HER TIME DANCING WITH A YOUNG MAN

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On August 20, 1924, Detective Sergeant Lawrence A. O'Dea "filed his answer in the District Supreme Court to "his wife's lawsuit" asking for "a limited divorce and alimony."

Sgt. O'Dea alleged that his wife, Mrs. Edith L. O'Dea, a grandmother, "spends most of her time in dancing school with a young man."

He also denies every charge of cruelty as well as non-support made by Mrs. O'Dea.  The DC detective says his wife "has made life during the past four years one of torture."

"DIVORCES DOUBLED DUE TO CHANGING ECONOMICS"

ONE OF FIVE MARRIAGES IN CHICAGO END IN DIVORCE

Chicago, Illinois (JFK+50) On May 14, 1923, the Associated Press reports out of every five marriage licenses issued here in the Windy City during the first three months of 1923, "one divorce has been granted."

Over the last decade "the ratio of divorces to marriages has nearly doubled."

Judges "ascribe the increasing number of marriage dissolutions to changing economic conditions." 

The AP says these same judges give the following reasons for divorce...

--entrance of women into fields of commerce

--too much jazz

--too much liquor

--ultra sophistication of the rising generation

--living with parents

--too little religion at home

--poor cooking

The AP states that economic marriages with both husband and wife working are more successful.
