"MAY BE U.S. AMBASSADOR TO GREAT BRITAIN"

ELIHU ROOT SUFFERS KIDNEY STONE, DOCS HOPE FOR NON-SURGICAL SOLUTION

New York City (JFK+50) On October 19, 1923, The Evening Star reports that Elihu Root* "is suffering from an attack of kidney trouble and is confined to his bed" here in New York.

Mr. Root's physicians had discovered a stone in the left kidney but are hopeful that it can be removed non-surgically.

The Star also reports that President Calvin Coolidge "is offering" Mr. Root the ambassadorship to Great Britain.

The Star states...

"Mr. Root has a brilliant reputation here and it is evident that his appointment would be highly popular."

JFK+50 NOTE

We find no evidence that Elihu Root ever served as United States ambassador to Great Britain.

*Elihu Root (1845-1937) was born in Clinton, NY & served as Secretary of War under McKinley & TR, Secretary of State 1905-1909, US Senator (R-NY) 1909-1915.  ER won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912.

"SENATOR KNOX ONLY NAME STILL IN DOUBT"

HARDING CHOOSING MEN FOR ARMS CONFERENCE WHO WILL ACCOMPLISH BEST RESULTS

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On August 14, 1921, it was learned that the American delegation to the World Arms Limitation Conference* to be held this November will include...

Charles Evans Hughes, chairman, Senator Henry Cabot Lodge (R-Massachusetts), Senator Oscar W. Underwood (D-Alabama), former Senator George E. Sutherland (R-Utah) and Senator Philander C. Knox (R-Pennsylvania).

Senator Knox, however, is the only name on the list that "is still in doubt."

President Warren G. Harding, according to Carter Field, is intent on choosing men for the conference who will "accomplish the best results."

Washington Naval Conference (Nov 12 1921 - Feb 6 1922) held in Washington, D.C. was attended by representatives from 9 nations & resulted in 3 major treaties which preserved peace during the 1920s.

JFK+50 NOTE

As it turned out, not only was Senator Knox ultimately excluded from the American delegation, but also former Senator Sutherland.  The fourth member of the delegation was Elihu Root.

Elihu Root served as Secretary of War (1899-1904), Secretary of State (1905-1909) & US Senator (R-New York, 1909-1915).

ELIHU ROOT ON WAR & TRAITORS

JFK+50:  Volume 7, No. 2432

ELIHU ROOT SAYS THOSE WHO SPEAK AGAINST THE WAR ARE TRAITORS

Chicago, Illinois (JFK+50) One hundred years ago tonight, September 14, 1917, Elihu Root*, speaking at the Coliseum here in the Windy City, criticized those who were questioning the U.S. decision to enter the world war and those who were speaking out against the war.

Mr. Root said...

"A nation which declares war and goes on discussing whether or not it ought to have declared war or not is impotent, paralyzed (and) imbecile...

The men who are speaking...against the war now...are rendering more effective service to Germany than they ever could render in the field with arms in their hands..."

He concluded by saying that anyone who argues to stop the sending of troops to (the front) "is a traitor at heart."

*Elihu Root (1845-1937) was born in Clinton, NY & graduated from Hamilton College & NYU School of Law (1867).  ER served as Secretary of War under Presidents McKinley & T. Roosevelt & Secretary of State in TR's 2nd term.

ER served as U.S. Senator from New York 1909-1915.  In 1912, he won the Nobel Peace Prize but supported the U.S. war effort after the nation declared war in 1917.

ROOT COMMISSION NEUTRALIZES GERMAN EFFORTS TO INFLUENCE RUSSIA

JFK+50:  Volume 7, No. 2357

GERMAN EFFORT TO SABOTAGE U.S. COMMISSION TO RUSSIA FAILS
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) The recent attempt by the Russians to interfere in the presidential election of 2016 is not the first time a foreign power has attempted to involve itself in America's interests.  100 years ago today, July 1, 1917, the White House received notification that the Germans had attempted to undermine the plans of the American commission to Russia "causing some of the Russian leaders to receive them coldly."

In one of the two cablegrams sent to the White House, the head of the American commission to Russia, Elihu Root*, stated that the German efforts had been removed by the commission.

*Elihu Root (1845-1937) was born in Clinton, NY & studied at Hamilton College & New York University School of Law.  ER was a junior defense counsel for Boss Tweed & his clients included Jay Gould & E. H. Harriman.

ER served as Secretary of War 1899-1904, Secretary of State 1905-1909, US Senator representing NY 1909-1915.  He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912.
