THE NATION'S FIRST PRIMARY

JFK+50:  Volume 6, No. 1854

NEW HAMPSHIRE: FIRST IN-THE-NATION PRIMARY

Concord, New Hampshire (JFK+50) Today the First-in-the-Nation primary is being held here in the Granite State.  The results are already in from Dixville Notch whose residents cast their ballots shortly after midnight Eastern Time.

In the Democratic Primary, Bernie Sanders blanked Hillary Clinton 4-0, while in the Republican Primary, John Kasich (pronounced Ka-sick) narrowly out-polled Donald Trump 3-2.

The favorites in today's voting are Mr. Sanders for the Democrats and Mr. Trump for the Republicans.  Both candidates have double-digit leads in the polls.  There are 390,000 Independent voters in the state and they may choose to cast their ballots in either primary.

The state of New Hampshire held its first presidential primary in 1916, but it was not until 1952 when it rose to its current importance.  In 1952, Dwight D. Eisenhower defeated front-runner Robert A. Taft in the Republican Primary.

Incumbent Harry S Truman was defeated by Tennessee's Estes Kefauver in the Democratic Primary.

In 1960, Senator John F. Kennedy handily defeated Paul C. Fisher by 85 to 14 per cent.  In 1968, incumbent Lyndon B. Johnson narrowly defeated Eugene McCarthy leading eventually to LBJ's decision to drop out of the race.
