TED KENNEDY BORN IN DORCHESTER

Dorchester, Massachusetts (JFK+50) On February 22, 1932, Edward Moore 'Ted' Kennedy* was born here in Dorchester**.  Ted was the last of nine children of Ambassador Joseph P. & Rose F. Kennedy.  His brother, Jack, was godfather.

Ted was elected to the United States Senate in 1962 when Jack was POTUS.  He would serve in the body 47 years and sponsored more than 300 pieces of legislation.

In 1980, Senator Kennedy made an unsuccessful bid for the Democratic nomination for president.  After his defeat by Jimmy Carter, Ted Kennedy said...

"The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dream shall never die."

*Edward Moore "Ted" Kennedy (1932-2009) was educated at Harvard University & the University of Virginia School of Law. EMK served in the US Army 1951-1953 & was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in 1959.  Ted managed JFK's western campaign in 1960. 

**Dorchester, MA is a section of Boston which is today the city's largest & most diverse neighborhood.  It is home of the JFK Presidential Library & Museum and the University of Massachusetts, Boston.

EDWARD MOORE "TED" KENNEDY BORN IN DORCHESTER

Dorchester, Massachusetts (JFK+50) On February 22, 1932, the brother of future President John F. Kennedy, Edward Moore "Teddy" Kennedy was born at St. Margaret's Hospital here in Dorchester.

Rose Kennedy traveled from New York to Boston in order that her baby could be delivered by Frederick L. Good, the family obstetrician.    Teddy was the fourth son and ninth child of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. 

Ted was named after Joe's personal aide and close friend, Edward Moore.

Mr. Moore had been assistants to three mayors of Boston including John F. "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald, Ted's grandfather.

Senator Kennedy wrote...

"At the time of my birth...the family spent summers and early autumns in Hyannis Port, and then headed to Bronxville, New York for winters.  We lived there in winter for six years after I was born.

From my vantage point as the youngest...my family did not so much live in the world as comprise (it).  We depended on one another.  We loved one another.  We were mutually loyal...with an intensity that owed more to joy than an urge to dominate."

Ted was elected to the Senate in 1962 when his brothers were President and Attorney General of the United States.  With the deaths of both, he continued to serve, spending almost forty-seven years in the Senate where he proposed more than 300 bills that were enacted into law.*

Senator Edward Moore Kennedy died at the age of 77 on August 25, 2009.  His remains are interred in the Kennedy plot at Arlington National Cemetery.

*According to RFK advisor William Vanden Heuvel, Hubert Humphrey told Teddy that he would nominate him for VP in 1968 & if elected would serve 1 term & then turn it over to Teddy.  WVH says that Teddy "absolutely said no, the pain & grief was all too fresh." (Source: Netflix documentary)

UNCLE TED DIES AT HYANNIS PORT

Hyannis Port, Massachusetts (JFK+50) On August 25, 2009, the last surviving Kennedy brother, Senator Edward Moore "Ted" Kennedy*, passed away at his home here in Hyannis Port.  The senator had undergone brain surgery and treatments of chemotherapy and radiation.

Teddy Kennedy, who became a United States senator in 1962 when his brother John F. Kennedy was POTUS, had been diagnosed with a brain tumor in May 2008.  At 47 years, he was the fourth longest-serving US Senator in American history. 

Ted became known as the "lion of the Senate" and championed causes relating to economic and social justice.  He called the fight for universal health care "the cause of my life."    After losing a bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1980, Senator Kennedy said...

"...the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dream shall never die."

John M. Broder of the New York Times, who describes Ted Kennedy as "one of the most effective lawmakers in the history of the Senate," writes that the secret of the Senator's success was "his ability to find Republican allies to get bills passed."

Upon the announcement of Edward M. Kennedy's death, the Kennedy family issued the following statement:

"We've lost the irreplaceable center of our family and  joyous light of our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism and perseverance will live in our hearts forever.  He loved this country and devoted his life to serving it."


*Edward Moore Kennedy (1932-2009) was born in Boston the youngest of Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy's 9 children.  Because of his father's work movements, Ted attended 10 different schools by age 11.

EMK graduated from Milton Academy in 1950, served in the US Army, and graduated from Harvard with an A.B. in history and government in 1959.
Ted served in the US Senate from 1962 until his death.

FATHER OF OUR COUNTRY BORN 284 YEARS AGO

Westmoreland County, Virginia (JFK+50) Two centuries and 84 years ago today, February 22, 1732, the father of our country and future first President of the United States, George Washington, was born here in Westmoreland County.

George's first job was as a surveyor in the Shenandoah Valley at age 17.  He served in the French and Indian War and was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses as well as the Continental Congress.  

General Washington was the unanimous choice of the congress to be commander-in-chief of the Continental Army.  In 1789, he was elected President of the United States.  After serving 2 terms, he retired to Mount Vernon where he died on December 14, 1799.

MARINES LAND AT DA NANG

MARINES LANDED AT DA NANG 50 YEARS AGO

Da Nang, South Vietnam (JFK+50) Fifty years ago today, March 8, 1965, 3500 United States Marines were landed north of Da Nang*.

The Marines were dressed in full battle gear and were each armed with a M-14 rifle.  They were greeted by Vietnamese girls with leis.

The Corps assignment was to secure the United States air base and free up the South Vietnamese Army for combat against the communists.

*Da Nang is a major port city of Vietnam located on the South China Sea and the Han River.  Today it is the commercial and educational center of central Vietnam.  Its' population is 1,100,000.  During the Vietnam War, Da Nang was the location of the world's busiest airport, the base used by both the United States and South Vietnam.

TED KENNEDY IS A PROFILE IN COURAGE 

Boston, Massachusetts (JFK+50) Six years ago today, March 8, 2009, Senator Edward M. (Ted) Kennedy, (D) Massachusetts, received the "Profiles in Courage Award" at the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Library here in Boston.

The brother of the late President Kennedy had served in the United States Senate for 47 years.  The award was presented to Senator Kennedy...

"in recognition of distinguished public service & the example he has set of political courage in public life."

"He carried the nation on his shoulders through the most important struggles of our time for justice, for equality, for opportunity and for freedom."

VW BUS BEGAN PRODUCTION 65 YEARS AGO

Sixty-five years ago today, March 8, 1950, the Volkswagen Micro Bus, officially labeled VW Type 2, went into production today in Germany.  The bus was the idea of Dutch businessman Ben Pon, an importer of the VW Beetle in the Netherlands.**

**The VW Bus became known in the United States as a "Hippie Van" because it was used to transport groups of young people and their camping gear to concerts and war protest rallies in the 1960s.  The VW Type 2 was produced to the end of the 1967 model year.

Dorchester, Massachusetts (JFK+50) Eighty-three years ago today, February 22, 1932, the brother of future President John F. Kennedy, Edward Moore "Teddy" Kennedy was born at St. Margaret's Hospital here in Dorchester.

In his Memoir, Senator Edward M. Kennedy wrote...

"My mother saved many momentos of my birth, as she did for all the children.  One of them...a framed card that bears an illustration of the White House (and is) signed by President Herbert Hoover...I still have hanging in my Senate office."

Teddy was the fourth son and ninth child of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr.  He was named after Joe's personal aide and close friend, Edward Moore.

Mr. Moore had been assistants to three mayors of Boston including John F. "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald, Teddy's grandfather.

Edward Moore Kennedy was baptized six days later at St. Peter's Church, 311 Bowdoin Street in Dorchester by the Rev. Leo O'Day.  Brother Jack served as godfather and sister Rosemary served as godmother.

Again in his Memoir, Senator Kennedy wrote...

"At the time of my birth...the family spent summers and early autumns in Hyannis Port, and then headed to Bronxville, New York for winters.  We lived there in winter for six years after I was born."

The Kennedy home in Bronxville, where the brothers had an elaborate electric train system, was demolished in the 1950s.

Senator Kennedy had fond memories growing up in the Kennedy clan.  He wrote...

"From my vantage point as the youngest...my family did not so much live in the world as comprise (it).  We depended on one another.  We loved one another.  We were mutually loyal...with an intensity that owed more to joy than an urge to dominate."

Mr. & Mrs. Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. announced today the birth of Edward Moore "Ted" Kennedy in Brookline, Massachusetts.*


*Teddy was 1st elected to fill the US Senate seat vacated by his brother, Jack, in 1962.

 He would go on to serve nearly 47 years in the senate where he proposed more than 300 bills which were enacted into law.


When JFK was asked by a reporter if the new comedy record by Vaughn Meader mimicking the Presidents voice brought "annoyment or enjoyment" the President answered he thought the record "sounded more like Teddy than it did me.....so he's annoyed."


Ted Kennedy made an unsuccessful bid for the Democratic nomination for President in 1980.  In his concluding speech he said:


"For me....this campaign (has ended).  For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives & the dream shall never die."


Edward M. Kennedy died at the age of 77 on August 25, 2009.

TET OFFENSIVE ENDS


The "TET" offensive in Vietnam finally ended today.  President Johnson says the offensive was a complete failure.


Despite the fact that North Vietnam lost 20 times the number of casualties as her enemies, defense positions, previously thought to be solid, have proven to be suspect.

KENNAN SENDS TELEGRAM TO STATE DEPARTMENT


American Charge d'affaires in Moscow, George Kennan, sent a telegram to the US Department of State today explaining his views on US policy toward the Soviet Union.


He says the Soviets are very suspicious of the west & cannot envision a "permanent peace" between the USSR & USA.*


*Kennan's views will become the basis of the American policy of the containment of communism.  Mr. Kennan died at the age of 101 in 2005.

MACARTHUR ORDERED TO LEAVE PHILIPPINES


President Roosevelt announced today that he has sent an order to General Douglas MacArthur to leave the Philippine Islands.  He cannot risk having an officer of MacArthur's caliber lost to the Japanese after the collapse of American forces on the islands.*


*While MacArthur delays the escape, he does obey the order in March 1942 & is spirited by PT boat to Melbourne, Australia.

US ACQUIRES SPANISH FLORIDA


Do Louis de Onis of Spain & Secretary of State John Quincy Adams of the United States have negotiated the Florida Purchase Treaty today.

By the terms of the treaty, Spain will cede the remainder of the Florida province to the U.S.*


*Andrew Jackson of Tennessee will be appointed Military Governor of the Florida territory.

"MIRACLE ON THE ICE" AT THE WINTER OLYMPICS


The U.S. hockey team defeated the USSR by a score of 4 to 3 in the Winter Olympic Games at Lake Placid, New York today.


The heavily-favored Soviet team had been expected to win easily over the Americans.*

*Later the USA defeated Finland to win the gold medal.  The U.S. coach was Herb Brooks who was the hockey coach at the University of Minnesota.
