CONSTITUTION SIGNED IN PHILADELPHIA
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (JFK+50) The United States Constitution was signed by delegates of the Constitutional Convention today here in Philadelphia.
The document will not, however, become the law of the land until 9 of the 13 states ratify.
The Constitution of the United States consists of a preamble & 7 articles.
The Preamble
"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, & secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves & our Posterity, do ordain & establish this Constitution for the United States of America."*

BLOODY BATTLE FOUGHT AT ANTIETAM CREEK
Sharpsburg, Maryland (JFK+50) A bloody battle was fought near Sharpsburg today along the banks of Antietam Creek.
Forces of the United States & Confederate States fought from dawn til dusk.
The fighting began at the Dunker Church along Hagerstown Pike & then spread into a huge cornfield across the pike.
By mid-day, the battle continued to an area separating two farm fields called "Bloody Lane".
Finally, the day's fighting came to a close at Burnside's Bridge at Antietam Creek. Casualties are reported as high on both sides.*
*Lee's forces retreat into Virginia the following day. More Americans were killed at the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862 than any other day in US history.
Lincoln claims victory & 5 days later issues the Emancipation Proclamation.

ACCORDS SIGNED BY BEGIN & SADAT
Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) Anwar el-Sadat of Egypt & Menachem Begin of Israel signed the Camp David Accords today at the White House.
The peace agreement, negotiated by President Jimmy Carter, was worked out over 12 days of discussions at the Presidential retreat, Camp David, in Maryland.*
*Sadat & Begin will later be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

JFK BLASTS LABOR LAWYERS
Boston, Massachusetts (JFK+50) Senator John F. Kennedy, speaking to the Montgomery County Bar Association today, blasted a "small group of unsavory labor lawyers" who represent corrupt union leaders.
JFK admonished the bar association to take action against the lawyers.

HONEY FITZ CELEBRATES BOSTON'S BIRTHDAY
Boston, Massachusetts (JFK+50) John F. "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald, former Mayor of the city of Boston, helped celebrate the city's birthday today on radio station WDHO.
September 17 is widely accepted as the birthday of Boston when a court of Puritans ordered the setttlement to be named "Boston" after the town in Lincolnshire from which many Puritans originated.

MARY AGNES GARGAN DIES
Boston, Massachusetts (JFK+50) Mary Agnes Fitzgerald Gargan died today of chronic hypertensive cardiorenal disease at her home at 22 May Street in West Roxbury.
The daughter of John "Honey Fitz" & Mary Fitzgerald & sister of Rose Kennedy leaves her husband, Joseph, & children John Jr., Mary Jo, & Ann.
