'THE NATIONAL TEAM PLAYED LOOSELY & MUFFED AT HOME, THEN STRUCK OUT IN PARIS"

HARDING TO CUBS:  U.S. 'MUFFED' AT HOME & 'STRUCK OUT' AT PARIS

Marion, Ohio (JFK+50) On September 2, 1920, Republican presidential nominee Senator Warren G. Harding gave a front porch address to the Chicago Cubs* of the National League.  The Cubbies were in town to play an exhibition baseball game.

The Senator said...

"I pay to you my tribute to baseball because I like the game, just like every other real American.  I want our country to float the championship pennant in the contest for human achievement."

Mr. Harding continued...

"It is my observation that the national team...played loosely and muffed...in our domestic affairs, then struck out at Paris."

*The Chicago Cubs finished the 1920 baseball season with a record of 75-79 & 6th place in the National League standings.  The manager was Fred Mitchell.
