"AMERICA AT ITS BEST CAN BE A CONFIDENT AMERICA"

JFK MEETS WITH DEAN RUSK IN PALM BEACH

Palm Beach, Florida (JFK+50) On December 12, 1960, President-elect John F. Kennedy met with Dean Rusk*, his newly appointed Secretary of State to be, here in Palm Beach.

In a joint appearance before the press, Mr. Kennedy said...

"It is my hope that in the coming years foreign policy of the United States will be identified in the minds of the people of the world as a policy not merely anti-communist, but...for freedom."

The President-elect also stated his concern about ending world hunger, disease and illiteracy.  He added that the "happy relationship" between the United States and Europe would continue to be the "bulwark of American security."

Dean Rusk said...

"...we are in a period of rapid and revolutionary (world) change...(and) America at its best can be a confident America..." 

 

*David Dean Rusk(1909-1994) was born in Cherokee County, GA & graduated from Davidson College.  DDR served in WWII & was president of the Rockefeller Foundation before serving as US Secretary of State (1961-1969).  Afterwards, he taught International Relations at the University of Georgia School of Law.
