"DR. CHARLES E. SAWYER TO LEAD SURVEY"

HARDING INITIATES SURVEY ON PUBLIC HEALTH, EDUCATION & WELFARE

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On March 9, 1921, President Warren G. Harding "entrusted" his personal friend and physician, Dr. Charles E. Sawyer* of Marion, Ohio, with conducting "one of the most important surveys" leading to the creation of a Department of Education and Public Welfare.

In a statement issued by the White House...

"President Harding is convinced that...public health, education and social justice...are so intimately related and vital...that he (will) begin at once a careful survey of all matters pertaining to these subjects."

*Dr. Charles Elmer Sawyer (1860-1924) was born in Wyandot, Ohio & graduated from Cleveland Homeopathic Hospital College.  He became the personal physician of Warren & Florence Harding.

CES was given the rank of Brigadier General in the Army Medical Corps by President Harding & reportedly misdiagnosed the President's coronary condition which led to his death in 1923.
