"WILL LOWER COLORS TO HALF-STAFF AFTER NOON"

GERMAN EMBASSY DOORWAY COVERED WITH LARGE U.S. FLAG DURING NIGHT

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On February 6, 1924, The Evening Star reports the German embassy "greeted early morning passers-by today with a large American flag, hung from the porte-cochere* and apparently nailed there."

The Star did not know the identify of the perpetrators of the deed but it was apparently because the German embassy first "refused to lower its colors to half-staff out of respect for Woodrow Wilson."

The Embassy had a change of heart and announced their colors would be lowered at 12:30 this afternoon.

*porte-cochere is a doorway to a building,  often very grand.
