"THE MEASURE NOW GOES TO THE SENATE"

HOUSE PASSES BONUS BILL OVER PRESIDENT'S VETO

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On May 17, 1924, the United States House of Representatives passed the Soldiers Bonus Bill* over President Calvin Coolidge's veto.

According to Dale Van Every of The Seattle Star, the vote was 313 to 78, 53 more than the two-thirds required of those members "present and voting."

Avery writes...

"The measure now goes to the senate, where it will be taken up Monday or Tuesday."

*World War Adjusted Compensation Act, a.k.a. Bonus Act, passed on May 19 1924, granted a benefit to veterans of American military service in WWI.

The bill provided for limited benefits in the short term & was replaced in 1936 by the Adjusted Compensation Payment Act which issued US Treasury bonds in place of the service certificates.  The bonds were redeemable at any time.
