"U.S. GAINS RIGHT TO EXTEND RUM PATROL"

GERMAN-U.S. REPRESENTATIVES SIGN RUM TREATY

Washington, D.C. (JFK+50) On May 19, 1924 "a rum treaty...was signed here today by diplomatic representatives of the United States and Germany."

The treaty, signed by U.S. Secretary of State Charles Evans Hughes and German Ambassador Otto Wiedfeldt*, "gives the U.S. the right to extend its rum patrol outside territorial waters."  

German merchants, by virtue of the treaty, may bring ship liquor into American ports "under seal."

*Dr. Otto Wiedfeldt (1871-1926) was born in Badel, Kalle, Germany & served as German ambassador to the United States in the 1920s.
