LADY THINKS HELEN MARIA DAWES WOULD MAKE 'FINE' VICE-PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE
Cleveland, Ohio (JFK+50) On June 8, 1924, The Sunday Star reports "an attractive looking little lady" in one of Cleveland's hotel corridors remarked "I think it would be wonderful if the (Republican) convention should nominate Helen Maria Dawes* for Vice-President."
The lady added...
"Wouldn't it be fine to have a woman on the Republican national ticket?"
*Charles G. Dawes received the nickname "Hell and Maria" for words he used at a congressional hearing investigating charges of waste and extravagance during WWI.
JFK+50 NOTE
While 'Helen Maria Dawes' wasn't nominated by the Republicans of 1924, Sarah Palin became the 1st Republican Vice-Presidential nominee in 2008. Two other women have secured the Vice-Presidential nomination of the Democratic Party, Geraldine Ferraro in 1984 & Kamala Harris in 2020.
There has been only one woman to secure the presidential nomination of a major political party and that, of course, is Hillary Rodham Clinton.
