"SATURATED IN SOME PAPERS BENEATH LT. GOV'S CHAIR"

4 RHODE ISLAND STATE SENATORS OVERCOME BY CHLORINE GAS

Providence, Rhode Island (JFK+50) On June 19, 1924, two Rhode Island state senators, Arthur Sherman and C. Sharpe, "were removed to the Rhode Island State Hospital...in serious condition" after being exposed to chlorine gas.

International News Service reports that the gas was saturated in some papers placed beneath the chair of Lt. Gov Felix A. Toupin*.  Two other senators were "overcome before the obnoxious chemical was discovered."

*Felix A. Toupin (1886-1965) was born in Lincoln, Rhode Island & earned his law degree at Boston University.  FAT served as Lt. Gov. of R.I., 1923-1925 & mayor of Woonsocket, RI, 1930-1936 & 1939-1940.
