"CURTISS RACER AVERAGED 227.5 MPH"

NAVY FLYER BREAKS SEAPLANE SPEED RECORD

Port Washington, New York (JFK+50) On September 27, 1924, Lt. David Rittenhouse* of the United States Navy "broke his former world seaplane speed record."

The Lt., piloting a Curtiss** seaplane racer, averaged 227.5 miles per hour on a half-hour flight.  His previous record, according to the Associated Press, was 169.89 miles per hour.

*Lt. David Rittenhouse won the 1923 Schneider competition held at Cowes on the Isle of Wright, England.

**Curtiss Aeroplane & Motor Company (1909-1929) was founded by G. H. Curtis & A.M. Herring in Hammondsport, New York.
