"SHOT HIS USUAL MACHINE-LIKE GOLF"

BOBBY JONES WINS NATIONAL AMATEUR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP...AT LONG LAST

Ardmore, Pennsylvania (JFK+50) On September 28, 1924, The Sunday Star reports that 22 year old Robert 'Bobby' Tyre Jones, Jr.* of Atlanta, Georgia yesterday "acquired the national amateur golf championship" he had sought for eight years."

The accomplishment came at the Merion Cricket Club where, reports the Associated Press, Jones "shot his usual machine-like golf."

*Robert Tyre Jones, Jr. (1902-1971) was born in Atlanta, Georgia & was educated at Georgia Tech, Harvard & Emory University.  He became a lawyer but is best known as one of the most influential figures in golf.  

RTJ founded & designed Augusta National Golf Club & co-founded the Masters.  RTJ dominated amateur golf 1923-1930 & turned pro in 1930.
