"FOR MISREPRESENTING HUSBAND'S CANDIDACY"

MINISTER IS BUGGY WHIPPED BY MAYOR'S WIFE

Brighton, Alabama* (JFK+50) On September 16, 1924, the Associated Press reports a "horse-whipping" was administered Saturday night to Rev. W. J. McCarty, a Methodist minister, by the wife of Mayor Henry M. Sharpe.

Mrs. Sharpe charged the minister "with misrepresenting her husband's candidacy.  She inflicted punishment on Rev. McCarty using a buggy whip.

Mayor Sharpe lost his bid for re-election and perhaps some self-esteem in the process.
