HITLER DEAD BY SUICIDE IN BERLIN BUNKER
Berlin, Germany (JFK+50) On April 30, 1945, 80 years ago today, German Fuhrer Adolf Hitler* committed suicide in his bunker 55 feet below the Reich Chancellery in Berlin. Russian troops had occupied the city and were shelling the area above the bunker.
Hitler, who had been living in the bunker since January 16, 1945, took a cyanide capsule and shot himself with a pistol. He died along side his mistress, who had just taken for his wife, Eva Braun**, who also took her own life.
According to survivors in the bunker, the bodies were taken up to the garden just outside the entrance to the bunker where they were doused with gasoline and set on fire. This was done according to Adolf Hitler's wishes.
*Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) was born in Austria & served in the German army in WWI & received the Iron Cross. After serving time in prison in the 1920s for leading a failed coup in Munich & writing his political manifesto, Mein Kampf, he & his Nazi regime came to power. They were responsible for the execution of six million Jews as well as millions of others.
**Eva Braun Hitler (1912-1945) was born in Munich, Germany & became the longtime companion & briefly the wife of Adolf Hitler. They met in 1929 when she was a model for his personal photographer & their courtship began 2 years later.
